"Pemanfaatan kelompok bekas-bekas DI/TII agaknya memang dianggap menguntungkan.

Malaysian authorities probe 'yuppie' Islamic cult
January 9, 2007
Islamic authorities from western Selangor state said that the Gerakan Pemuda Kahfi was thought to have started three years ago and had strange and secretive practices.
"The leaders are very sleek. They dress well when approaching their potential victims," a spokesman from the Selangor Islamic Religious Department, Fakrul Azam Yahya, was quoted as saying in the Star daily.
"The victims are blindfolded when taken to the movement's training centers," he said.
Fakrul Azam said that the group was targeting young Muslim professionals and executives, known as yuppies, who pay 1,000 ringgit ($284.54) to join.
He added that authorities are gathering evidence before a possible fatwa or edict against the group.
"We are especially keen to obtain a copy of their scriptures as it will allow us to scrutinize the roots of its deviant teachings," he was quoted as saying in the New Straits Times.
Religion is a sensitive issue in the majority Muslim nation, where Islamic authorities are always on the lookout for cults said to deviate from mainstream Islamic practice.

JAIS Monitors Suspected Deviant Group
SHAH ALAM, Jan 8 (Bernama) -- The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) is monitoring and gathering data on a group suspected to be practising deviant teachings and operating in the Klang Valley over the last three years.
Jais Public Relations Officer Fakrul Azam Yahya said Jais would outlaw the group, which calls itself Gerakan Pemuda Kahfi (GPK), if it was true that it spread deviant teachings.
"We are monitoring the group. We seek the cooperation of former members of the group to come forward to help the department collect data and take action against the group," he said.
He said the group's activities were exposed by the Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement (Abim) last year following several complaints from the public, and the media has also reported this.
"The group has its own way of drawing members from among the Muslim community," he told reporters when approached by reporters after a briefing on the Rufaqa Corporation, here.
Fakrul Azam said the group targeted young executives and professionals and imposed a RM1,000 membership fee for religious guidance.
"They have a holy book, which contains matters such as `wahyu' (divine revelations), for members. We have come to know that the location of the group's centre of activities is kept a secret from the new members and they are brought there blindfolded. We have yet to see the book," he said.
Fakrul Azam said people with information on the group can contact the Jais Investigation and Education Division at 03 - 5519 6351.

Deviant sect with strange induction under probe
09 Jan 2007
The department’s public relations officer Fakrul Azam Yahya said the movement was secretive and had strange induction methods.
He said new members of Gerakan Pemuda Al Kahfi have to pay RM1,000 to join and must agree to wear a blindfold before being taken to a secret location for their initiation.
He said they are subjected to "counselling" by senior members and the group utilises its own scriptures.
He said since the group moved around a lot, the department has found it difficult to track it down.
He said there were suspicions that the group may have links to deviant movements in Indonesia.
The department has to date received numerous complaints about the group but investigations were hindered by the group’s movements and the lack of information.
Fakrul Azam said Al Kahfi was first detected by Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia (Abim) at the end of 2004, but since then the movement has grown stronger in Selangor.
However, hard evidence was needed before a fatwa (declaration) could be issued against the group. JAIS is appealing to disgruntled ex-members to come forward to help the department.
"We are especially keen to obtain a copy of their scriptures as it will allow us to scrutinise the roots of its deviant teachings. We heard it contains matters such as wahyu (divine revelations), for members," he said.
Fakrul Azam urged those with information about the group to call 03-5519-6997.
Yesterday, JAIS gave a briefing for representatives of Muslim organisations, NGOs and enforcement agencies in Selangor on Rufaqa, a group which is accused of being a front for the banned Al-Arqam movement.
JAIS updates
