"Public Donation"

An official in the PM's department said the school's former staff, Umar Abduh, made the allegations in his recently published book entitled Membongkar Gerakan Sesat NII (The deviant teaching of Pesantren Mewah Al Zaytun).

"The Islamic Development Department (Jakim) is analysing the book which was published last June to determine the authenticity of the allegations," added the official.

He said the Maahad Al-Zaytun has been recruiting new students from Malaysia for several years now but his department was informed of the book only a few weeks ago.

"We will also investigate the allegation that Maahad Al-Zaytun has been collecting public donations in Malaysia," he added.

There has been a huge controversy over the syllabus used by the school, which some quarters in Indonesia claimed to be deviating from the original teachings of Islam.

Built in 1996 in Indramaju, West Java, the 1,200 hectare school campus includes three hostel blocks, lecture theatres, a dining hall and a mosque, which can accommodate 6,000 people.

Several others projects are under construction including a seven-story mosque -- Masjid Rahman Lil Alamin -- that can accommodate 100,000 and a stadium.

Meanwhile, the prime minister's department is also monitoring closely the on-going attempt by former Al-Arqam followers to revive it's movement in Rawang, Selangor.

The official said there were several attempts by the group to do so previously, but they were foiled by the religious authorities.
